Information Technology Programs
The Information Technology programs offered at various ITT Technical
Institutes include Computer Network Systems, Multimedia,
Software Applications and Programming, and Web Development.
Skilled technicians in Information Technology can help employers maintain
a competitive edge and cost-efficient operations. The need is rising for
technically competent individuals who can provide appropriate computing
solutions. In addition to technical knowledge, the IT individual should
also have good communication skills, an aptitude for multi-tasking
situations and the ability to assess users' needs when developing
computer-based solutions.
Each IT program is eight-quarters in length. Classes are generally held
three days per week typically on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 3.5 to 5
hours and/or on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for 3.5 to 5 hours,
depending on student enrollment. The program is structured for working
adults who have various demands on their time.
Instructors in the IT programs have practical experience in the area in
which they teach.
The objective of the ITT Technical Institute Information Technology
programs is to provide a broad-based foundation to help students begin to
develop the technical skills used in a variety of areas in this field.
The Information Technology programs include computing and general
education courses, as well as instruction in network principles, process
and application projects as they apply to the area of study.
Computer Network Systems
Information Technology affects almost every business. Companies use
network systems technicians to help upgrade computer systems and develop
wide area and local area network capabilities. The CNS program explores a
variety of computer networks. Additional curriculum topics, investigated
through classroom and laboratory experiences, include global system
integration, network system design and implementation of network systems.
Students will have the opportunity to use computer systems, network hubs,
patch panels, printers and other common computer peripherals during the
CNS program.
The Information Technology
program option of Computer Network Systems is offered at selected ITT Technical Institutes.
Multimedia
The Multimedia area of the Information Technology program teaches students
how to perform technical tasks associated with the design and creation of
interactive multimedia communication. Students are exposed to various
information on authoring software, motion graphics development, visual
design principles and other related technical subjects through classroom
and laboratory experiences.
The Multimedia
program is offered only at select ITT Technical Institutes.
Software Applications and Programming
The Software Applications and Programming area of the Information
Technology programs teaches students how to perform tasks associated with
software application development and its modification. Through classroom
and laboratory experiences, students are exposed to a variety of
information on software scripting, programming languages, database
development and other related technical subjects.
Software
Applications and Programming is offered only at select ITT
Technical Institutes.
Web Development
The Web Development area of the Information Technology program teaches
students how to perform tasks associated with the creation, installation,
security, update and maintenance of business websites. During classroom
and laboratory experiences, students are exposed to diverse information on
software scripting, programming languages, database development, network
concepts, visual design principles and other related technical subjects.
The Web
Development program is offered only at select ITT Technical Institutes.
Facts About Information Technology in Business and
Industry
The Information Technology Association of America has defined information
technology as "the study, design, development, implementation, support or
management of computer-based information systems, particularly software
applications and computer hardware."
Information Technology's ("IT") progressive evolution, which is due to the
advancement of computers and communication technology, continues to have a
profound impact on our lives. The need is rising for technically
competent individuals who can provide appropriate computer solutions. IT
is an academic discipline that affects nearly every business and industry.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer and data processing
services will add over 1.3 million jobs from 1996-2006, representing a 108
percent increase. These jobs will require employees with technical skills
in areas such as multimedia, web design, programming and computer network
systems. This increase in the number of these types of jobs is due
primarily to technological advancements and the need for higher skilled
workers. This is projected to be the fastest growing industry during this
period.
The need for information technology workers in many industries has become
apparent. An article in the September 22, 1998 issue of Occupations
Outlook Quarterly magazine said opportunities abound in the field of
information technology. The job market for computer-related skills is
booming, and demand for computer professionals is projected to remain
strong through the year 2006. According to the article, "A degree in
computer science or a related technical field is perhaps the easiest
ticket into the field."
Groups, such as the Information Technology Association of America ("ITAA")
and the U.S. Department of Commerce's Office of Technology Policy, have
issued reports that identify what they consider to be strong evidence of
the Unites States' inability to keep up with the high demand for
information technology workers. This "skills anemia" is a result of the
technological success of today's economy. According to the January 19,
1998 edition of Computer Reseller News, "we have the ability to release
new technology faster than we can build the skilled work force to
implement and maintain the new products."
Firms need skilled computer professionals to maintain a competitive edge
and cost-efficient operations.
ITT Technical Institutes have programs that are geared more toward
teaching the skills needed by businesses and may be more occupation
specific than those designed by a traditional college. "The information
systems field is becoming very skills-based," said Jennifer Koss, a
self-employed computer consultant in Occupations Outlook Quarterly
magazine's September 22, 1998 issue. "You see a lot more people today
without a typical four-year degree."
Information Technology workers are needed in nearly every industry, and
the demand for technically skilled workers is growing in almost every
industry, not just in those considered high-tech. Therefore, the
Information Technology programs of study are an ideal addition to ITT
Technical Institutes' program offerings.
